Antique Chair – Italian Renaissance-Style Walnut Armchair with Embossed Leather
This beautiful piece from our antique chairs collection is an 18th/19th century Italian Renaissance-style armchair. Made from solid walnut, it’s a masterclass in detailing and decoration.
The armrests and lower stretchers have turned spool designs, adding sculptural interest and Baroque flair to the frame. The seat and backrest are upholstered in embossed leather – often called “Cordovan” – with intricate patterns of birds, foliage and fruit. The motifs are further highlighted with hand painted red, gold, blue and green, giving the chair a stained glass effect that’s both stunning and historically accurate.
Large brass nails secure the leather, adding a tactile element that’s authentic and period. The combination of Renaissance ornamentation and Louis XIII structure makes this a chair that’s not only functional but a statement of timeless style.
Fully restored and ready to use, this armchair brings regal charm and history into any room – from classical spaces to more eclectic rooms looking for a focal point with depth and story.
