Antique Chairs from the 19th Century French Empire Bergère in Mahogany
This beautiful piece from our antique chairs collection is a French Empire bergère from around 1815. Made from solid mahogany, this original early 19th-century armchair is full of Empire grandeur and classical motifs.
The bergère has a deep seat, curved back and enclosed sides, comfort and presence. It’s upholstered in a rich textured fabric with red and gold stripes that match the warm mahogany frame perfectly. The armrests have beautifully carved dolphin heads at the front, protection and guidance in classical iconography. The tails of the dolphins reappear where the arms meet the backrest, a subtle but clever detail.
It stands on slightly tapered sabre legs, for elegance and strength. It’s been restored, the wood surface finished by hand in traditional French shellac, so it has a soft sheen and keeps its antique character. The structure is solid, the upholstery is in very good condition, ready to use.
This bergère is perfect for refined living rooms, studies or as a luxury reading chair. It’s got history and classical beauty, so it’s a must have for collectors and interior designers looking for an original Empire piece.
