,,Chinese lacquer furniture was born in France during the reign of Louis XV and enjoyed real success throughout the 18th century. From furniture imported from Asia by haberdashery merchants, French cabinetmakers had the idea of cutting these lacquer panels to place them on Western furniture: desks, old chests of drawers, cupboards, etc. Fixed by finely chiseled gilded bronzes, these Chinese lacquer panels are veneered on the original furniture like traditional marquetry. The parts of the furniture without lacquer are covered with varnish or shellack to create a perfect harmony of tone and shine.”
