Refined early 19th-century game table, designed for chess and card games, exemplifying the understated elegance and fine craftsmanship of the period. The table combines decorative sophistication with practical functionality, making it an ideal piece for a salon, library, or study.
The rectangular flip-top is beautifully veneered and carefully composed in contrasting woods. The central inlaid chessboard is executed in maple and walnut, creating a clear and balanced two-tone pattern. Surrounding the chessboard, the peripheral border is veneered in cherrywood, introducing a warm tonal contrast. The entire composition is further enhanced by delicate maple stringing, which subtly frames the surface and emphasizes its refined geometry.
When opened, the table reveals a spacious playing surface lined with green felt, perfectly suited for card games such as bridge or whist. The original hinged mechanism operates smoothly and securely.
The table is raised on four slender, tapered and vertically fluted legs, with crisp block transitions and small square feet — an elegant neoclassical detail characteristic of early 19th-century furniture. Structural elements are partly crafted from solid walnut, displaying a rich colour and an attractive, naturally developed patina.
A versatile and elegant piece, equally suited as a functional game table or as a decorative accent within a sophisticated interior.
