Description

Early 19th Century Empire Mahogany Secretary Desk, circa 1810

An exceptional and rare Empire period secrétaire, crafted circa 1810, beautifully veneered in richly figured mahogany and refined with elegant gilt-bronze fittings. This striking piece embodies the refined craftsmanship of the early 19th century and combines impressive architectural form with practical functionality.

The secrétaire features a distinctive upper cabinet with a central door retaining its original lock and key. Beneath are three slender drawers with brass knobs leading to a beautifully arranged interior cabinet. The fitted interior is thoughtfully designed with a central compartment flanked by small drawers and pigeonholes, providing practical storage for writing implements and correspondence.

The fall-front writing surface reveals a beautifully finished writing area veneered in fine cherrywood. The façade is further enhanced by delicate brass string inlays, decorative rosettes, lion-head mounts and additional gilt-bronze applications that underline the richness of the design.

Below the writing section are three spacious drawers offering generous storage. The piece stands on slightly curved feet, giving the composition a graceful and balanced appearance.

The secrétaire has been carefully restored and professionally hand-polished with traditional shellac, enhancing the depth and warmth of the mahogany veneer while preserving its historical character.

A highly decorative and functional collector’s piece, ideal for a refined interior or distinguished study.
