Description

An exceptional original Biedermeier secretary, crafted in beautifully figured birch and dating to around 1825. This elegant piece exemplifies the refined proportions and restrained sophistication that define the Biedermeier period.

The secretary features a distinctive pedimented top above a well-balanced façade with five generous graduated drawers, each retaining its original lock. All keys are present and in working order.

The fall-front writing surface opens to reveal an impressive fitted interior. At its centre is a spacious cabinet compartment above a wide drawer, beneath which is an architectural mirrored compartment framed by a series of columns, creating a remarkable sense of depth. Surrounding this are six small drawers fitted with turned knobs, providing practical storage while enhancing the secretary’s symmetrical design.

The writing flap is decorated with a finely executed polygonal panel. The front is flanked by full columns veneered in birch and topped with ebonised Corinthian capitals crafted from lead—an unusual and highly decorative feature that reflects the exceptional quality of the cabinetmaker’s work.

The secretary has been sympathetically restored and traditionally hand-polished with shellac, preserving its original character while presenting beautifully for contemporary interiors. It stands on its original block feet.

A superb example of early 19th-century German Biedermeier craftsmanship, combining elegant architecture, practical functionality, and outstanding decorative detail.
