This exceptional Louis XVI commode, dating to circa 1790, is a refined example of late 18th-century neoclassical design. Crafted from high-quality walnut and adorned with elegant brass hardware, the piece embodies the harmony, symmetry, and architectural clarity characteristic of the Louis Seize period.
The façade is meticulously structured into geometric panels, framed with delicate banded inlay (Bandelwerk), lending the commode a rhythmic and highly sophisticated appearance. The top is beautifully veneered in a fielded pattern with crossbanding and further enriched with intricate inlaid detailing, showcasing the craftsmanship of the period.
The three drawers are each divided into three panels, maintaining the architectural coherence of the design. They retain their original brass handles and escutcheons, as well as working box locks; three keys are included. The side panels are decorated with large inset fields, echoing the refined geometry seen throughout the piece.
Resting on elegant fluted legs, the commode presents a light yet structured silhouette typical of Louis XVI furniture. The warm walnut tone is enhanced by a traditional hand-applied shellac polish, which highlights the natural grain and preserves a beautiful, authentic patina.
The piece has been carefully and professionally restored with great respect for its historical integrity and original substance.
