German Biedermeier Solid Walnut Wardrobe, circa 1825
A fine German Biedermeier wardrobe dating to circa 1825, constructed predominantly in solid walnut and distinguished by its restrained architectural form and beautifully figured timber.
The wardrobe has the strong, balanced proportions characteristic of the early Biedermeier period. A pair of large panelled doors is framed by broad vertical stiles and surmounted by a substantial moulded and projecting cornice. The lower section rests on four simple square feet, reinforcing the clean architectural character of the piece.
The natural beauty of the walnut provides the principal decoration. Carefully selected solid walnut panels display a particularly rich and varied grain across the doors and sides, creating an attractive composition without the need for excessive ornamentation. Small brass escutcheons provide a restrained decorative accent.
The double doors open to reveal a particularly practical and well-organised interior. A narrow section to the left is fitted with several shelves, providing convenient storage for folded items and smaller objects, while the larger compartment offers generous hanging space with a wooden clothes rail. An additional full-width storage compartment is positioned above.
An important practical feature is the wardrobe’s fully demountable construction. The cabinet can be dismantled into its principal components, making transportation and installation considerably easier despite its substantial proportions.
The wardrobe has been professionally restored with respect for its age, materials and original construction. The hand-polished finish enhances the depth and warm tonal variation of the solid walnut while preserving the natural character and patina of the timber.
A handsome and highly functional example of early German Biedermeier cabinet furniture, combining substantial solid-walnut construction, restrained architectural design and unusually practical storage.
