Description

Biedermeier Applewood Secretary Cabinet with Mahogany Interior, Germany, circa 1820

An elegant and finely crafted Biedermeier secretary cabinet made of beautiful applewood and dating to the early 19th century, circa 1820. The piece reflects the refined proportions and restrained decorative language typical of the Biedermeier period, with subtle Empire influences.

The upper section features a central cabinet door framed with brass mouldings, flanked by two small drawers. Below is a projecting drawer with brass pull knobs, followed by a decorative dentil frieze that adds an architectural character to the façade.

The secrétaire section opens to reveal a beautifully arranged interior veneered in mahogany, creating a striking contrast with the warm tone of the applewood exterior. The interior is composed of numerous small drawers, practical compartments, and a central mirrored niche. Beneath the writing fall is an additional pull-out writing surface, which provides extra working space and can conveniently serve as support for a laptop.

The lower section contains three large drawers, all fitted with working locks. Five keys are included with the piece.

The cabinet has been carefully restored and traditionally hand-polished with shellac, preserving its historic character and warm patina. The corpus stands on solid block feet.

A refined and highly decorative example of early 19th-century German Biedermeier furniture, combining elegant proportions with practical functionality.
