Biedermeier Ash Secretary Cabinet with Inlaid Interior, Germany, circa 1820
An impressive Biedermeier secrétaire cabinet crafted in ash wood, dating to around 1820 and made in Germany. This elegant piece beautifully reflects the refined aesthetics of the late Empire and early Biedermeier period, combining architectural clarity with delicate decorative details.
The upper section features a single-door cabinet crowned with a pedimented top and decorative inlay work. The cabinet is lockable and opens to reveal a practical storage space.
Below, the secrétaire section unfolds to reveal an exquisitely designed interior. The writing compartment is fitted with a narrow drawer, two small drawers with letter compartments, and three small drawers on each side. The centre features a mirrored interior with a beautifully inlaid base panel. Hidden behind the writing surface is a secret drawer that opens through a discreet pressure mechanism, adding an intriguing functional element typical of high-quality Biedermeier furniture.
Beneath the secrétaire are three spacious drawers, all fitted with working locks. The entire façade is decorated with elegant ebonised string inlays that emphasise the geometric harmony characteristic of the period.
The piece rests on solid block feet and has been carefully restored and traditionally hand-polished with shellac, preserving its historical character while presenting a beautiful warm patina. All original keys are included (six in total).
A remarkable and sophisticated example of early 19th-century German Biedermeier craftsmanship.
