Classical Walnut Marquetry Secretary Desk, circa 1800
An elegant classical secretary desk crafted in walnut with fine marquetry decoration, dating to around 1800 and reflecting the refined aesthetics of the Empire period.
The upper section is veneered and features a drawer fitted with a traditional box lock and key. The fall-front writing section opens to reveal a beautifully designed interior cabinet. The arrangement includes numerous small drawers, removable letter compartments, and open storage spaces, providing practical organisation for documents and writing accessories.
At the centre is a particularly decorative architectural compartment with parquetry decoration, flanked by column-like elements and a symmetrical mirrored interior. This central section can be gently pulled forward, revealing additional hidden storage space behind it for documents.
The lower section contains three drawers with distinctive marquetry panels designed in a brickwork pattern, creating an attractive decorative contrast. Beneath the secrétaire are two further large drawers, all fitted with original box locks. Four keys are included.
The piece stands on elegant tapered feet and has been carefully restored and traditionally hand-polished with shellac, preserving its authentic historical character and warm patina.
A refined and highly decorative example of early 19th-century classical furniture, combining sophisticated craftsmanship with practical functionality.
