Each cabinet is distinguished by its elegant architectural form, with a cylindrical body raised on a broad circular plinth and surmounted by a projecting stone top. The restrained design is characteristic of the French Empire period, allowing the rich colour and particularly attractive figuring of the mahogany to take centre stage.
The curved doors are beautifully veneered in highly figured mahogany, carefully selected to emphasise the natural movement and depth of the grain. Each door is fitted with a small, understated brass knob, preserving the clean and refined appearance of the pieces.
Originally conceived as somnos or bedside cabinets, pieces of this form were fashionable in France during the early decades of the 19th century. Their sculptural cylindrical shape makes them equally suitable today as bedside tables, side cabinets or decorative pedestals.
The pair retains a wonderfully elegant presence and offers an excellent example of the restrained, architectural character of French Empire furniture.
