Description

An exceptional and rare Biedermeier secrétaire, crafted in North Germany, likely in the Braunschweig region, circa 1815, in the manner of the Stobwasser workshops.

Executed in finely figured maple veneer laid on an oak and softwood carcass, the piece presents a refined and harmonious palette, enhanced by its elegant light tone and subtle patina. The architectural superstructure is particularly striking, crowned by an ebonised pediment supported by slender black columns with bases and capitals.

At the centre of the upper section is a small door adorned with delicate verre églomisé-style decoration in the Greek taste, flanked by open galleries and a series of small drawers enriched with finely painted ornamental details. Below, a wide drawer with brass handles introduces the secrétaire’s main cabinet section.

The fall-front opens to reveal an exquisitely fitted interior. The writing surface is ebonised and inlaid with a maple frieze, opening onto a highly sophisticated arrangement of drawers, compartments and arcaded open niches. A central door, painted with a classical Greek scene, conceals a hidden compartment, reflecting the refined craftsmanship and ingenuity of the period. The lower section is decorated with intarsia simulating masonry, adding depth and architectural character.

The base is fitted with two large drawers retaining their original box locks, and the piece stands on elegant tapered feet. All four original keys are present.

This secrétaire has been carefully restored and finished with traditional hand-applied shellac polish, preserving its authenticity while enhancing the beauty of the materials.

A museum-quality piece intended for connoisseurs and collectors of early 19th-century German furniture.
